While both Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt fans have been celebrating the impending arrival of the stars' first baby since the pregnancy announcement, Ranbir found himself at the receiving end of criticism from some admirers after he cracked a joke about Alia's weight gain.

The soon-to-be parents along with director Ayan Mukerji were promoting their upcoming movie Brahmāstra when Ranbir made a remark on Alia's weight gain as she was pregnant. A few people took to social media to criticize the actor's humour and labeled his body-shaming of Alia unacceptable.

Fan accounts on Instagram, Reddit, and other social media sites posted a clip of their discussion in which Ranbir was heard interrupting Alia as she discussed about attending Brahmāstra promotions.

Alia said, “We will do it (promote the film extensively). If you are asking why we are not phailoed (spreading) everywhere… right now our focus is…” until Ranbir interjected, “Well, I can see somebody has phailoed,” as he glanced at Alia's growing belly. Ranbir patted Alia on the back and playfully added, "Joke," as she appeared startled. In the video, Alia can be seen donning a loose, colourful t-shirt and a pair of yellow shorts.

Several viewers commented on the video. "This is sad to watch," an Insta user remarked, while another added, "Alia for a moment: did I really marry this?" “Alia deserves better,” one fan wrote, while another used the phrase "Damn Red Flags." Another follower said, “That was a disgusting joke to say to a pregnant woman.” “It was distasteful and not very mature," another tweet went.

Alia and Ranbir exchanged their wedding vows at their Mumbai residence on April 14 this year. They made their pregnancy announcement on Instagram later, with Alia sharing a snapshot of the two of them viewing the ultrasound image and wrote in the caption, "Our baby..... coming soon."

On the work front, the makers just released a teaser of Brahmāstra's new song Dance Ka Bhoot. The eagerly anticipated movie is scheduled to be out on September 9. It also includes Amitabh Bachchan, Nagarjuna and Mouni Roy in important roles. Ranbir's most recent film was Shamshera; he is also part of Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal alongside Rashmika Mandanna and Anil Kapoor. He will also appear in an untitled Luv Ranjan movie starring Shraddha Kapoor.
