Ayan Mukherji’s Brahmāstra is gearing up for a massive release on the 9th of September with massive hopes pinned on it. For the director too, the film comes as a stark shift from his previous endeavours Wake Up Sid and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in terms of both subject matter and scale (albeit Brahmāstra Part 1: Shiva too is an origin story). And to raise the stakes, the upcoming fantasy adventure is touted to be one of the biggest global releases for an Indian film.
Yes, as per the latest trade reports, Brahmāstra will be releasing across 8000 screens worldwide with as many as 5000 of them part of the domestic reach (including all Indian languages). This, in many ways, will be the widest release for a Hindi film to date.
Alongside, Brahmāstra is also part of Disney’s mega international slate and becomes the studio's very first international release as a distributor. Although Disney had always planned for a wide global release of the film, Deadline reported in April that the studio has U.S. and Canada as part of its slate.
And to raise the stakes even further, Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva is rumoured to be the most expensive Hindi film made to date on a budget of Rs. 410 crores. The film also joins the elite list of other productions such as RRR, 2.0, Saaho, Radhe Shyam, and others with regards to the budget and should the current estimates be accurate, Brahmāstra will edge past Thugs of Hindostan as the costliest Bollywood film so far.
Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva is a joint production venture of Fox Star Studios, Dharma Productions, Prime Focus, and Starlight Pictures.
The Ranbir Kapoor – Alia Bhatt starrer is part of Ayan Mukherji’s cinematic universe called Astraverse which, akin to the Marvel and DC Cinematic universes, comprises a secret society called Brahmānsh. The same society has protected many divine Astras or weapons for many generations together from the eye of the world but things take a dramatic twist when Brahmāstra, the mightiest Astra of all, is now on the brink of waking up and destroying the entire world.
Ranbir Kapoor’s Shiva has a mysterious connection with Brahmāstra and the first instalment of the planned trilogy is centred on his journey to discovering his destiny as the Divine Hero of the universe.
Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy, and Nagarjuna Akkineni.
