As 2024 ends, Netflix celebrates one of its most successful years and gears up for an exciting 2025. The streaming giant recently announced its first release of the year, Black Warrant, set for January. Starring Zahan Kapoor in his streaming debut, the show promises a groundbreaking concept in Indian entertainment. The makers have now unveiled the first teaser, and it’s nothing short of gripping.

Following a stellar 2024 with hits like Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, Amar Singh Chamkila, The Great Indian Kapil Show, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, and CTRL, Netflix India starts 2025 strong with Black Warrant, India’s first prison drama. Launching January 10, the series delves into the morally charged environment of Tihar, Asia’s largest prison, through rookie jailer Sunil Kumar Gupta’s perspective as he confronts India’s most dangerous criminals.
Created and helmed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Satyanshu Singh, with co-directors Ambiecka Pandit, Arkesh Ajay, and Rohin Raveendran Nair, the show explores Sunil’s struggles with power dynamics and moral dilemmas, revealing the harsh truths of prison life. Zahan Kapoor stars as Sunil, alongside a talented cast including Rahul Bhat, Paramvir Singh Cheema, Anurag Thakur, and Sidhant Gupta in pivotal roles.

Produced by Applause Entertainment and Andolan Productions in collaboration with Confluence Media, the series draws inspiration from real events. It’s based on the book Black Warrant: Confessions Of A Tihar Jailer by Sunil Gupta, a former superintendent at Tihar, and journalist Sunetra Choudhury. The series marks Vikramaditya Motwane's return to Netflix with long-form storytelling, kicking off India’s 2025 content slate.
