There was hardly any doubt that superstar Mohanlal would reprise his role as the host of Bigg Boss Malayalam 6, which is set to begin streaming soon. But the surprise this time is that the reality show will once again return to Chennai – a venue that was abandoned for Mumbai by the makers after the COVID pandemic in Season 2 and 3.
OTTplay has exclusively learnt that last week the team shot the promos of the upcoming season. A senior source from Disney+ Hotstar tells us, “We filmed the promos with Mohanlal last week. It will air soon.”
Ask the person when the show will begin streaming, the source tells us, “As of now, we haven’t decided on the date. We are looking at somewhere between March and February, but it will also depend on various factors including Mohanlal’s schedules. We will take a call soon, including about the theme of this year’s show.”

Incidentally, Mohanlal is set to leave for the UK for L2: Empuraan’s shoot this month. The show’s date will be decided on his upcoming projects including Rambaan , which also has a schedule abroad apart from portions in Kerala. In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Tovino Thomas, who is also part of Empuraan, had told us that the shoot of the Prithviraj Sukumaran-directorial has been designed in a way that it allows its performers to also do other projects.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time that the broadcaster Asianet has decided to plan Bigg Boss Malayalam around Mohanlal’s schedule. Last year too, the venue was shifted to Mumbai for his convenience.

“Mohanlal was shooting for Malaikottai Vaaliban in Rajasthan while Bigg Boss Malayalam 5 was on. Where they were shooting (Jaisalmer) had limited access and there was only one flight – to Mumbai. We took all of that into account while planning the previous season,” the source explains. “It’s not like we wanted to leave Chennai for Mumbai, but the situation demanded we do that.”
The source also tells us that the work on the Bigg Boss House in Chennai is currently progressing. Much like season 2 and 3, this time too EVP Film City will play host to the venue of the show, which is expected to see a slew of film and TV actors, social media influencers and other prominent personalities. The makers are yet to reveal if this season too will have a contestant chosen from the public, like last year’s Gopika Gopi.
The previous winners of Bigg Boss Malayalam were Sabumon Abdusamad, Manikuttan, Dilsha Prasannan and Akhil Marar. The second season was cancelled midway due to the pandemic and didn’t have a winner.
Bigg Boss Malayalam 6 will be streaming on Disney+ Hotstar and broadcast on Asianet.
