Mufti was the first time that Century Star Shivarajkumar and Roaring Star Sriimurali collaborated professionally. It was meant to be a Sriimurali film, which had a powerful character that director Narthan thought only Shivarajkumar could do justice to and that is how Mufti came together. In the film, although Shivarajkumar’s character Ranagal is often alluded to, he makes a physical appearance only in the second half of the film and is shown as this powerful and ruthless gangster in a place called Ronapura.
He doesn’t get much of a backstory in Mufti, but once the character became immensely popular, both Narthan and Shivarajkumar toyed with the idea of bringing him back onscreen and exploring the rise of Bhairathi Ranagal. The film, also called Bhairathi Ranagal, is releasing in theatres on November 15, and given that the team is also keen on doing a Mufti sequel to explore what happens to Shivarajkumar’s character after his incarceration, the question is – will Sriimurali make an appearance in the prequel?
Well, if you’ve been holding out hope to see Sriimurali as the undercover cop Gana towards the end of Bhairathi Ranagal, Shivarajkumar has now confirmed that it will not happen. Bhairathi Ranagal will not feature Sriimurali, even though Mufti ended with Gana realizing that Shivarajkumar’s character knew all along that he was an undercover cop.
Fans were hopeful of catching a glimpse of Sriimurali, because actors like Devaraj as Raghunath Bhandri, Chaya Singh as Vedavathi Ranagal, Madhu Guruswamy as Singha, and Babu Hirannaiah as Shabari, were reprising their characters. This time, the story will also include newer characters played by Gopalkrishna Deshpande, Pratap Narayan, Rukmini Vasanth, Shabeer Kallarakkal, and Rahul Bose, among others. The focus is squarely on how Ranagal’s childhood shaped his bond with Ronapura and how he tries to do right by them with the law as a lawyer.
But when the system fails him, he is forced to step outside of it to give his people justice. Why and how that happens is what Bhairathi Ranagal is all about.
