Bhairathi Ranagal, the Mufti prequel that had Century Star Shivarajkumar reprising his character from the 2017 film yet again, in a story that explored how he came to be a brutal crime lord, released in theatres on November 15. The film, directed by Narthan, opened to largely positive reviews, with audiences loving Shivarajkumar’s return to the classic black-on-black attire that had become quite the rage since Mufti.
During the promotions of the film, Shivarajkumar had spoken about Zee Network’s interest in acquiring the post-theatrical rights of Bhairathi Ranagal, since Mufti is already with the platform. Also, Shivarajkumar’s maiden home production Vedhaa was with Zee and the actor is judge on their popular dance reality show. So, it was thought that both the satellite and digital rights of Bhairathi Ranagal are with Zee.
However, sources now suggest that while the rights have been sold, Zee only picked up the TV rights. The streaming rights of Bhairathi Ranagal have gone to Amazon Prime Video and the film is likely to drop on December 25. The release of the much-awaited prequel had coincided with Shivarajkumar’s health scare diagnosis and the actor is headed to the US next week, with surgery slotted for December 24.
Bhairathi Ranagal, meanwhile, follows his tale right from childhood, following in the footsteps of his father, who relentlessly submitted petitions for the betterment of their village, Ronapura, with government officials, but to no avail. Young Ranagal eventually takes a drastic measure to get people to take note, which lands him in prison. During this stint, he tries to turn his life around and obtains a law degree, which he uses to help the citizens of Ronapura. But when the system fails him, he is forced to resort to violence yet again.
The big antagonist in the tale was Rahul Bose, while the film also starred Chaya Singh, Madhu Guruswamy, Babu Hiranaiah, Gopalkrishna Deshpande, Shabeer Kalarakkal and Rukmini Vasanth, among others.
