Jhimma 2, the sequel to director Hemant Dhome’s 2021 hit Jhimma, is continuing to put up a terrific show at the box office and is now the second-biggest grosser in Marathi industry this year. Comprising Suhas Joshi, Nirmiti Sawant, Siddharth Chandekar, Kshitee Jog and others in its lineup, the film was (co)produced by one of the most revered filmmakers in the country - Aanand L Rai.
Under Colour Yellow, the Raanjhanaa director’s home banner, the film has made a killing at the box office, registering a superb Rs 14 crore in nearly four weeks. And that’s not all, the film is still sustaining its victorious run, with houseful boards all around the state, yet again proving the director-producer’s ability to gauge the pulse of audiences without compromising on filmmaking standards.
For the unversed, Jhimma 2 is a story of seven women, who unite for Indu’s 75th birthday in the UK, unfolding amidst the backdrop of the picturesque Lake District. The critics, upon the film’s release, praised Amitraj’s music and for the director’s knack for humour, deeper understanding of feminism, human relationships without being preachy.
Jhimma 2 was jointly produced by Colour Yellow alongside Jio Studios and Chalchitra Mandalee. In addition, Aanand L Rai’s Atmapamplet is making waves on a global pedestal too, enjoying rave reviews from critics and film buffs at the much-revered Berlin Film Festival. It yet again emphasises the depth of storytelling in Marathi cinema and how it merits a wider audience.
The filmmaker’s taste as a producer was also quite evident in his films like Good Luck Jerry and An Action Hero recently. As a director, Aanand L Rai is currently working on Tere Ishk Mein, his third collaboration with Dhanush and AR Rahman after Raanjhanaa and Atrangi Re. The film, set for a mid 2024 release, is believed to be a Raanjhanaa spinoff.
