The trailer for the upcoming Telugu film Kalki 2898 AD has left scores of fans speechless for its marvellous visuals and stunning world-building. However, what rests as the cherry on top is Kamal Haasan’s cameo appearance towards the end of the trailer. With reports speculating that Kamal Haasan will play the main antagonist, it is not a new thing for the actor to play a grey shade. In the past, Kamal Haasan has acted in roles that operate in morally grey areas. Here are some of them:

Indian – Aha

Indian is a 1996 vigilante action film directed by Shankar and featuring Kamal Haasan in dual roles. The film revolves around a former freedom fighter whose personal loss makes him take up anti-corruption elimination. Soon, he is seen in a situation of conflict after he gets to know his son is involved in corruption himself. In Indian, Kamal plays both the father and son, with the latter's role having shades of grey. A sequel for Indian 2 is set to release on July 12, and it is helmed by Shankar, with Kamal Haasan reprising his iconic Indian thatha role.

Sigappu Rojakal – Aha

Sigappu Rojakal is a 1978 film helmed by Bharathiraja. The psychological thriller features Kamal Haasan as a serial killer who targets young women and gets physically close with them only to finish them off. Kamal Haasan played his anti-hero role to perfection, giving chills to the audience when he unleashed his serial killer instincts. The film also features Sridevi, Goundamani, Vadivukkarasi and others.

Aalavandhan – Prime Video

Aalavandhan is an action thriller that was released in 2001 and directed by Suresh Krissna. Kamal Haasan played dual roles in the film, which also features Raveena Tandon, Manisha Koirala, Sarath Babu, Gollapudi Maruti Rao, Madurai G.S. Mani and Milind Gunaji, among others. Aalavandhan is about twin brothers who bear the brunt of abuse from the hands of their step mother. As they grow up and separate, one of the twin brothers attempts to kill the fiancée of the other, whom he imagines to be his stepmother, owing to his mental illness. Kamal Haasan, who played the twins, brought his villainous as well as heroic side to the film.

Dasavatharam – SunNXT

Dasavathaaram is a sci-fi action thriller film in which Kamal Haasan played 10 different roles. The film is directed by KS Ravikumar and is about a scientist who attempts to get hold of a deadly virus that his boss is planning to sell to a terrorist nation. At the same time, an American mercenary is also in search of the virus to unleash a catastrophe for his own benefits. The series of events culminates with the 2004 Indian Tsunami event, tying the threads of various characters together. Besides playing the hero scientist and antagonist mercenary, Kamal Haasan played eight other roles, including a celebrated singer diagnosed with illness, a Shiva devotee from Chola period, and a Telugu-speaking inspector.
