Made on a reported budget close to Rs 80 Cr, Mohanlal’s directorial debut Barroz could end up being the superstar’s biggest box office disaster so far. In its first three days, the 3D film has failed to make a mark at the Kerala box office, and collected only Rs 1.11 Cr from the Indian market – taking its overall domestic gross to Rs 6.51 Cr.

Industry tracker Sacnilk had reported that the bulk of these collections had comes from its original Malayalam version, which contributed to 1.06 Cr, with the Tamil and Telugu version bringing the rest. The Hindi version of the film, which hit theatres on Friday, however, failed to bring in any footfalls, as per early estimates.
Mohanlal, who has been promoting the film across the country, was hoping that his directorial debut would appeal to the family audience, and especially the children, this holiday season. However, the sluggish pace combined with the long duration of the film meant that its target audience too found it uninteresting.
The makers had carried out the post-production of the film in the UK, with VFX works in Thailand. The music of the film, which was composed by foreign composer Mark Killain and Lydian Nadaswaram, was one of the highlights of the movie, which was cinematographed by Santosh Sivan.
Barroz also had a start-stop schedule, with the entire production lasting almost four years. The delay also didn’t help matters, and contributed further to increasing the budget of the movie, which only had Mohanlal as the lone star. Other cast members include Guru Somasundaram and Maya Rao West, who played the role of Isabella in the movie. Pranav Mohanlal also appears in a cameo in Barroz.
The film’s OTT rights have been sold to Disney+ Hotstar, which is scheduled to release the film on th e platform in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada by February 2025. The official release date is yet to be announced.
