Barroz Day 2 box office collection: Mohanlal’s 3D children’s fantasy film, which saw a decent opening, couldn’t sustain the same momentum and rakes in only Rs 1.65 Cr in domestic gross

Malayalam actor Mohanlal’s directorial debut Barroz failed to sustain its intial momentum on Day 2, with the movie falling almost a crore short of its competitor Marco at the domestic box office.
The 3D film, which raked in Rs 3.45 Cr from Indian markets and had a total worldwide collection of Rs 5.5 Cr on Day 1, couldn’t sustain the same on Day 2. While this was expected considering that December 26 was a weekday and a working day for many, the movie’s Day 2 collection of Rs 1.65 Cr, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, is still a massive fall.

While the makers haven’t revealed the budget of Mohanlal’s directorial yet as it was more or less a passion project from the superstar, this is expected to be about Rs 40 crore, considering the technology used as well as the time spent in making the film. The movie took over 1300 days of work to bring to the screens. It was delayed due to the pandemic as well as other commitments of the actor.
With the film fetching largely negative reviews, Barroz might end up as a loss-making venture for the producers. The film’s satellite and OTT rights have already been sold to Asianet and Disney+ Hotstar.
A litmus test awaits the film for the upcoming weekend, when the movie could still be the preferred choice for families with both Rifle Club and Marco – the other two Malayalam movies running in theatres in Kerala – being action films.
Barroz’s lacklustre box office performance underlines the bad year that Mohanlal has had this year. His first release in 2024, Malaikottai Vaaliban, too didn’t perform as well as expected. The movie, which had split opinions, was helmed by Lijo Jose Pellissery.
Mohanlal, meanwhile, is looking forward to a better 2025 – with Tharun Moorthy’s Thudarum, up for release on January 30, followed by Prithviraj Sukumaran’s much-awaited L2: Empuraan on March 27, 2025.
He has also signed Jithu Madhavan’s next directorial, Sathyan Anthikad’s Hridayapoorvam, Nanda Kishore’s Vrushaba and another project, mostly helmed by Drishyam director Jeethu Joseph will be announced soon .
