Despite the unfavorable reviews, Mohanlal’s directorial debut Barroz – a 3D children’s fantasy – still managed to give tough competition to Unni Mukundan’s Marco on the Christmas Day clash. This was a given, considering Mohanlal’s fandom, the movie’s genre, and that Marco had already completed five days, heading into December 25.
The margin at the Indian box office between the two films, however, wasn't much, as Barroz stood to earn Rs 3.6 Cr against Marco’s Rs 3.74 Cr, as per early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk. The worldwide estimates are yet to be let out by the makers of both movies. Based on the trend, Marco could hold the edge there too.
Mohanlal’s directorial debut, which was released on 3D screens across the country, grossed Rs 3.6 Cr, which was higher than his previous December release – Jeethu Joseph’s Neru, which did only Rs 2.8 Cr. The latter, however, went on to make Rs 85 Cr at the worldwide box office by the end of its theatrical run.

It remains to be seen if Barroz can accomplish that. All signs, especially the reviews, point to the contrary – with the movie’s lacklustre script and sluggish scenes, taking away the entertainment factor, even for the audience it is targetted at. That said, with limited choices for children during the Christmas and New Year holidays, Barroz could emerge as the only choice for families this week.
With Marco also holding strong, Barroz might eventually end up losing the box-office battle with the violent action thriller. Aashiq Abu’s Rifle Club has also seen an increase in occupancy in the past week. The film, which is also an action-thriller, has Dileesh Pothan, Darshana Rajendran, and Anurag Kashyap as part of the cast.
Though the film’s screenplay is slow, Barroz does have a good production quality – with its art department, and VFX department acing their job, along with its music. Mohanlal also essays the role of a 400-year-old treasure-guarding ghost well, and his animated sidekick Voodoo is another highlight in the film.
