The big Deepavali release from Kannada cinema was Roaring Star Sriimurali’s Bagheera, an action-packed superhero origin story that Ugramm and KGF maker Prashanth Neel had mooted for the actor. Dr Suri, who has been associated with Prashanth for a while, was entrusted to develop a basic plot into a full-fledged script, and direct the film since the latter was busy with the making of KGF: Chapter 2 and then Salaar: Ceasefire.
Released in theatres on October 31, Bagheera received wide-spread positive feedback and after a slow start at the box office, bookings picked up over the festive weekend. What astounded audiences, though, is that the makers, Hombale Films, had been able to sell the streaming rights prior to the release and that too to Netflix, a platform that had, for the longest, shunned Kannada cinema. The film is now set for its OTT premiere. Bagheera will drop on Netflix on November 21, with versions in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Tulu.
Even as Bagheera’s OTT release has been announced, only 3 weeks into the theatrical run, the film continues to hold a fair share of screens. However, after the first week’s initial burst of good collections, the box office has not been great for the film, with trade tracker Sacnilk estimating its lifetime net at Rs 20.55 cr, almost all of which came from the Kannada version. The film, according to sources, had been made at a budget of close to Rs 40 cr.
Bagheera was Sriimurali’s first collaboration with Hombale Films and had him play a law-abiding IPS officer, determined to clean up nefarious activities in his jurisdiction. But when his superior officers clip his wings, he decides to take on a vigilante avatar and do what he could not with his khaki. KGF fame Garuda Ram was the main antagonist of the film, which also starred Achyuth Kumar, Prakash Raj, Rangayana Raghu, and Rukmini Vasanth, among others.
