The 77th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) took place on February 18, 2024, celebrating the best in filmmaking from across the globe. Often referred to as the ‘British Oscars’, the BAFTAs recognize outstanding achievements in both British and international films released in the previous year. This year's ceremony will be held at the Royal Festival Hall in London's Southbank Centre.
Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer dominated the 2024 BAFTAs, winning seven awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor. Yorgos Lanthimos' Poor Things also had a strong showing, taking home five awards including Best Actress for Emma Stone. However, Greta Gerwig's Barbie has returned home with empty hands, and no win from BAFTAs, despite garnering positive critical acclaim.
For the unversed, Barbie has received five BAFTA nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling and Best Original Screenplay for Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach this year. Barbie even won only one Golden Globes for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, despite receiving five other nods.
All eyes are on Oscars, also known as Academy Awards 2024 now, as Barbie achieved eight nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), Best Supporting Actress (America Ferrera), Best Adapted Screenplay, and two Best Original Song for ‘I'm Just Ken’ and ‘What Was I Made For?’. Its artistic merit is further recognized in the Best Production Design and Best Costume Design categories. The Oscars will be held on March 11, 2024 at 4:30 am. The live-action Barbie film, based on Mattel's iconic doll, smashed box office records in 2023, grossing a whopping $1.44 billion and becoming the year's highest-earning film. Notably, the film was directed by a woman, making this achievement even more impressive.
