The OTT release of Baby John, which made its big screen debut during Christmas 2024, is likely to take place in February 2025. The film is set to stream on Prime Video, but ahead of its full release, it will reportedly be available for rent in the next two weeks. Soon after that, in the final week, by February 28, 2025, subscribers of the OTT giant can watch the action thriller featuring Varun Dhawan in the leading role.

Baby John as a reimagining of Theri

With Baby John, Kalees reimagines Atlee's 2016 Tamil feature Theri. Wamiqa Gabbi, Zara Zyanna, Keerthy Suresh, and Jackie Shroff make up the rest of the leading cast of the film.

In the action thriller Baby John, a brave police officer leads a double life to protect his daughter from the perilous criminal underworld. This story follows a DCP as he undergoes a transformation and goes on a journey to protect his family.

In addition to Kiran Koushik's cinematography and Ruben's editing, Thaman S. wrote the score.

Theatrical release and reception

The theatrical release of Baby John occurred on Christmas Eve, 2024, to mixed reviews from critics and a disastrous performance at the box office.

Based on initial estimates, Baby John made between Rs. 11.25 and Rs. 13.50 crore net on its first day in India's theatres. The film has earned Rs. 39.74 crore in India and Rs. 13.66 crore overseas as of January 2, 2025, for a total of Rs. 53.4 crore globally. At the end of its run, it earned between Rs. 56.49 and Rs. 59 crore globally.

Post-release performance and financial losses

Also lacking in the much-needed buzz were the film's marketing and promotions. For a film targeting the masses, the opening of Rs. 12 crore was disappointingly low. Since negative word of mouth spread due to poor reviews, the film's box office performance has plummeted. Baby John has only made Rs. 35 crore in India and Rs. 47 crore globally after eight days of release. Considering the film's reported budget of Rs. 160 crore, the profits are pitiful. The fact that the film went from 4300 theatres throughout the country to 1800 after only eight days in theatres is indicative of how serious the slump is.
