Even die-hard fans of Manju Warrier would have never picturised the Malayalam star in an action-oriented role in her Tamil movie. But over the years, the actress has made it a habit of picking the most unexpected of roles and surprising her fans with her performance. Her action turn in Ajith Kumar’s Thunivu was no different as was lauded for her character Kanmani in the H Vinoth heist-thriller.
In an exclusive chat with OTTplay, the Ayisha actress talks about her initial reaction when the team pitched her the role as well as apprised her that it would have plenty of action scenes.
“I was excited and nervous because I knew it was going to be very, very challenging. I also had apprehensions because you only know how it would look on screen after you do it. But I wanted to do justice to the character and their expectations,” says Manju.
The superstar, whose latest release Ayisha is currently running in theatres, also says that she was lucky to be working with a great team who had confidence in pulling off the action sequences. “By God’s grace, I had the opportunity to work with a wonderful team including Vinoth sir, Ajith sir and the amazing stunt team. I have to thank Supreme Sundar sir as well as each member of the action team. I only had to wave my hands, but they were the ones who had to fall hard on the floor. So, they were kind enough to repeat their action for me, even when we had to go for retakes because of my fault. And of course, our DOP Nirav Shah, who made it look convincing,” she says.
Ask her if she would have thought twice if such a role was offered to her in Malayalam and Manju says, “There’s nothing like that. It all depends on how convincingly it will be made for the screen. I am open to all kinds of films.”
Thunivu is expected to release on Netflix on February 10.
