The allure of vampires seems to have taken effect on Awkwafina. The popular musician and actress has joined the cast of Universal Pictures’ upcoming Dracula film, Renfield.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming monster film will star Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage in starring roles.

The film is based on a character from Bram Stoker’s iconic 1897 vampire novel, Dracula. The film will revolve around the character of Renfield, an inmate at a psychiatric asylum who develops strange behaviour after his encounter with Dracula. He develops an erratic and manic personality, starts consuming live insects and animals, and develops a servile attitude towards Dracula.

In the novel, his overwhelming loyalty to Dracula is challenged by the presence of Mina Harker, and he tries to protect her at the cost of inviting Dracula’s wrath.

The upcoming film will explore the relationship between the two in a contemporary setting, and will be an adventure-comedy film. Hoult will star as the titular protagonist while Cage will play Dracula. Awkwafina will portray a woman who joins Renfield in his quest to challenge Dracula.

The Universal Pictures’ film is directed by Chris McKay, popular for helming 2017’s The Lego Batman Movie and the Chris Pratt led film, The Tomorrow War.

Meanwhile Awkwafina is currently working on the upcoming live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid and will be a part of the voice cast of DreamWorks’ The Bad Guys. She is also working on the latest season of her Comedy Central show, Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens.
