Awkwafina and Sandra Oh are two comedians that are making a name for themselves with their recent performances. The latest news is that the two actors will team up as sisters in a comedy for 20th Century Fox.
Awkwafina plays a tightly wound, Jeopardy-obsessed young woman, who has to reunite with her long estranged sister played by Oh, when they have to come up with the money to settle their mothers gambling debts and set off on a cross country trek.
As reported by Deadline, the movie has been acquired by 20th Century Fox and has Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum as producers. They will produce the movie under the banner of Gloria Sanchez Productions. Booksmart, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar were previous movies under the production.
The movie will be written by Jen D’Angelo, who wrote Hocus Pocus 2, and will reportedly be helmed by Jessica Yu.
Awkwafina, best known for her roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve, both of which earned her Golden Globe Awards, was also seen in Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians. Oh was last seen in Netflix’s Over the Moon, where she voiced Mrs. Zhong.
The actors were both in Raya and the Last Dragon, the computed animated fantasy, where Awkwafina played the last dragon named Susu, while Oh played Virana. They also previously collaborated in multiple episodes on Grey’s Anatomy.
