James Cameron might have needed a 13-year gap to render Avatar: The Way of Water but looks like his efforts are paying rich dividends now. Ahead of the release of the second instalment of the mega Avatar franchise (commissioned by Disney), one saw no doubt in the film going to be a major blockbuster success but the question that lingered the longest was this: can Avatar 2 breach the $3 billion mark? Well, the film might fall short of that target by a few million dollars but it is certainly resetting the box office standards through a stellar global theatrical run.
And now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Avatar: The Way of Water has gone past the worldwide box office collections of Star Wars: The Force Awakens to grab the fourth spot in the order of all-time highest-grossing films. This means that Cameron's Midas touch has worked wonders again and he has now directed three of the four most profitable films in the world. Avatar 2, which is still running in theatres across the world, has collected $2.075 billion so far and has surpassed the 2015 Star Wars film which concluded its box office reign at $2.071 billion (not adjusted to inflation).
Only a couple of days ago, The Way of Water expelled Avengers: Infinity War from the fifth position on the all-time top grossers list. The film, which is said to be made on a budget of over $400 million, will now look to skittle past Cameron's other timeless blockbuster Titanic, which has collected about $2.19 billion at the global box office.
The top two highest-grossing films of all time are Avatar (2009) and Avengers: End Game (2019). Should inflation adjustments be made, Avatar would still finish in the second spot on the all-time list with $3.5 billion with the 1939 classic Gone With the Wind finishing at the top by grossing over $3.9 billion.
As far as the Avatar franchise is concerned, James Cameron intends on extending the storyline up to Avatar 5 which would mean that fans have three other sequels in the offing. Avatar 3 production is said to have begun in 2017 with Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, too, already confirmed by the studio.
