One actor who has recently spoken about a rejection that probably still bothers him is Austin Butler. He has had a phenomenal year with Dune: Part Two giving him an interesting role, and The Bikeriders re-establishing him as a heartthrob. Austin has been busy promoting the latter, which is now on the big screen, and he has chosen to talk about a significant rejection he faced. Did you know Butler auditioned for a pivotal part in The Hunger Games but the role eventually went to another actor? Yes, you read that right.
Not many were aware of this interesting trivia that Austin Butler recently revealed while talking to BuzzFeed. Butler auditioned for The Hunger Games to play Peeta. Yes, the star wanted to be the pivotal man in the franchise that also starred Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth. The role was given to Josh Hutcherson, who played it in the movies from 2012 to 2015. There are no reports on why Austin was not hired, but it has certainly been a point of regret for the star. “I auditioned for The Hunger Games and I didn’t get it at all,” Austin Butler said. “I don’t even think I got a callback. What’s the character, Peeta? Josh Hutcherson got that; he’s great.” The Bikeriders star Jodie Costner was also present in the interview and, talking about her rejection story, revealed, “I auditioned for Mamma Mia! That was a time. That was also when I was auditioning for Killing Eve as well.”
After the release of the latest Hunger Games film, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Lionsgate has already confirmed that they are developing a prequel film based on Suzanne Collins’ upcoming novel Sunrise on the Reaping. The book is not out yet and will be released in 2025. The adaptation of that book is slated to hit the big screen on November 20, 2026. Francis Lawrence, who has helmed every Hunger Games installment since 2012’s Catching Fire, is in talks to direct.
