When AR Murugadoss announced his production venture August 16 1947 after a sabbatical, movie lovers were excited. Billed as a pan Indian project, with Gautham Karthik headlining it, it was said to be a period drama which revolves around the pre-independence era.

What left many intrigued was the film's unique plot, something which hasn't been dealt with before. The story is set in a village where people lead miserable lives under a cruel British officer who doesn't mind finishing off people if they fail to execute his strict and unreasonable orders.
When India becomes an independent country, the cold-blooded officer decides to hide the news from the villagers and torture them for one more day. He also ensures that two of the residents who got to know about the news will not be able to communicate the same to others.
How the villagers react when they finally know about the happiest news of their lifetime and deal with the officer forms the rest of the story. August 16 1947 opened to mixed reviews from critics and viewers, thanks to its unimpressive execution, though selection of the subject garnered praise.
Debutant Revathy Sharma plays the female lead in the movie which stars Richard Ashton, Jason Shah and Pugazh among others in pivotal roles. Sean Roldan has composed music for the project which has cinematography and editing handled by Selvakumar SK and Sudharsan R respectively.
August 16 1947 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Gautham Karthik has taken to his Twitter page to inform the same to everyone. The movie helmed by NS Ponkumar hit the screens a month ago. It is the second outing of Gautham this year after Pathu Thala, which also dropped on Amazon Prime a week ago.
