The year 2023 is special for director Atlee, who is basking in the success of his latest movie Jawan. Starring Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role, Jawan became one of the top-grossing movies of 2023 by raking in more than Rs 1000 crore in worldwide ticket sales.

Do you think Atlee has reached the peak of his career? The young director doesn't seem to believe so. If anything, he seems to be only beginning.

2023 also marks Atlee's decade-long journey as a director. He made his debut in 2013 with the romantic drama Raja Rani. He's now in the process of mapping out the next 10 years of his career.

Hollywood debut on the cards

In a recent interview, Atlee revealed his next 10-year plan, which includes, some significant changes to his narrative style, approach to filmmaking and cross-country collaborations.

"My next 10 years. Everyone expects to see me do something different, right? I am working on that genuinely. And I know these projects (Vijay-Shah Rukh Khan movie, Hollywood debut, etc) will happen within that scope. I am going to do something that I have not done before. I am going to take you into a world that you have not seen in the last 20 years," said Atlee.

He revealed that he is going to work with a leading Hollywood screenwriter to craft a movie, which will challenge the "mass commercial" format perfected in South Indian cinema over the last 30 years.

He also noted that he intends to pitch this script to Vijay and Shah Rukh Khan. "The rest depends on whether or not they like it. If they don't like it, I will go with the stars who like it," he added.

Atlee suggested that the scope and ambition of his next movie is massive with several big names from across the world willing to join hands with him. "Someone from Hollywood can also do part in it. Some people might think that I talk about impossible things. But, I only talk about the things that are possible. The things you find as fantasy are my reality. That's not my fault. I am being rewarded for my efforts," he said.

Atlee's 'killer' script for Ajith Kumar

Atlee is a self-confessed die-hard fan of Thalapathy Vijay. Of his five directorial ventures, three movies were headlined by Vijay. But, he also seems to be making efforts to collaborate with Vijay's contemporary, Ajith Kumar.

Atlee revealed that he met Ajith Kumar on the sets of Arrambam, courtesy of Nayanthara. At the time, Atlee was directing Nayanthara in Raja Rani and she arranged for a meeting between Atlee and Ajith. "When Nayanthara introduced me to Ajith sir, he jokingly asked me whether I finished my school," he recalled.

"I like Ajith sir very much. I have a killer script ready for him. The day he's ready, I will make the film," he added.

One of the major complaints against Atlee's movies is the ill-fated ending for the leading ladies in them. The director noted that he was aware of this concern and has promised to rectify it in movies he will do in the next 10 years. "Flashbacks and the deaths of heroines are the first two things on my Don't do list for the next 10 years," he revealed.
