Arna Mukhopadhyay is all set with his debut feature film Athhoi with Anirban Bhattacharya and Sohini Sarkar in the lead. Based on William Shakespeare’s Othello, Arna and his theatre group Natadha staged Athhoi with Anirban and Turna Das (later, Sohini). It was considered to be one of the most popular theatre productions in Kolkata in recent times.
Now, Athhoi is made into a film with Arna playing Athhoi, aka Othello, Sohini as Desdemona, and Anirban, Iago. The trailer of the film was dropped on June 6.
In Shakespeare’s play, Othello is the Moor of Venice. Here, Athhoi hails from a backward class in India. Anirban, whose screen name is Gono, provokes Athhoi by reminding him of the atrocities that are historically inflicted on Dalits in India and how the community silently bears the trauma of the humiliation of India’s upper class. Finally, it turns out to be a tussle of love and jealousy. The two-minute-and-45-second-long trailer features Ditipriya Roy, Mimi Dutta, Arpan Ghoshal, Kaushik Banerjee, and others. The trailer focuses on Anirban’s theatrics and outstanding music.
Produced by Jio Studios and SVF Entertainment, Athhoi will be released on June 14. At the trailer launch, Arna said, “Athhoi is a labour of love that has taken years to bring to fruition. With this trailer, we aim to delve deep into the complexities of human emotions and present a modern interpretation of Shakespeare's timeless tale. Through this film, we hope to evoke profound emotions and reflections.”
