SonyLIV is gearing up for the release of their upcoming thriller series, Manvat Murders, in which Ashutosh Gowariker plays the lead role. Whether he's on set or in the background, the filmmaker-actor is comfortable either way. He is only interested in a script that is intriguing and engaging. On that front, it's clear that Manvat Murders succeeds. An upcoming Marathi web series based on the book Footprints on the Sands of Crime by the late IPS officer Ramakant S. Kulkarni will tell the story of a string of abductions and killings that occurred in the village of Manwath, Maharashtra, from 1972 to 1974. Playing the investigation's head, Gowariker, fills in for the late cop.

Just over a year after his last series, Kaala Paani (2023), when Mid Day asked how he felt about facing the camera for Manvat Murders, Gowariker shared that playing Kulkarni, who was famous for solving the Raman Raghav case, is the most fortunate thing that has happened to him. If it weren't for Ramakant S. Kulkarni, a lot of cold cases would still be unresolved. He says the book Footprints on the Sands of Crime gave them a glimpse into his method, his meticulousness, and how he dealt with suspects and coerced confessions.

Gowariker dabbled in acting because he wanted to fulfil his goals. Holi (1984) was his debut film, and he went on to star in numerous other films, such as Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro (1989), Chamatkar (1992), and Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994). During his transition to directing in the early 1990s, critically acclaimed features such as Lagaan (2001), Swades (2004), and Jodhaa Akbar (2008) demonstrated his mastery of narrative. His meticulous nature also shows in his performing roles.

Preparation for the role

During his preparation in January of 2024, the actor met Kulkarni's family. Gowariker had the opportunity to meet Anita Bhogle, Ramakant Kulkarni's daughter, and her husband Harsha Bhogle in order to fully comprehend the character—his demeanour, actions, and convictions. Their advice was invaluable as he got ready for the part. Kulkarni did an outstanding job in investigating the killings, and he hopes this series will help him get the recognition he deserves.

Ashish Bende directed Manvat Murders, which co-stars Sai Tamhankar and Sonali Kulkarni. Collaborating with two of his favourite actors was another thrilling part of this show. Having Sonali and Sai on board was like taking an acting class all at once for Gowariker.

Manvat Murders will begin streaming on October 4, 2024, on SonyLIV (OTTplay Premium).
