5 Movies That Got Patriotism Right

Patriotism in Hindi cinema is a tried-and-tested flavour that works during all seasons. There is no time period or specific year to release a film that drives in patriotic fuel. A genre so timeless and adrenaline-pumping is more misused by filmmakers than doing justice. Jingoism served as patriotism, which is what the new streak looked like a couple of years ago. Fighter is the recent movie caught in the debate as the trailer led to many accusing the movie of jingoism. But time and again comes one film that shows the world what the real film about loving your nation looks like and that resets the clock to the base. But that one film also doesn't always get the desired audience always.

But then, what are we here for if we are not helping films reach a much wider audience? Filmmakers have tried their hands at stories that are complicated but not hate-mongering in the way they show the conflict. The rise of the hero is not at the cost of making another villain or demeaning them. Only a handful can crack that code and when they do, we are up for a treat.

Below, we mention 5 Hindi movies that got the patriotism right and were much more than just films about defeating neighbouring countries and claiming each other’s lands. Check them out.

Lakshya (2004)

Available On: Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Farhan Akhtar, in his directorial bloom, along with Javed Akhtar and the team, crafted a patriotic movie about a man's coming-of-age as he leaves behind his carefree life to join the army. Lakshya focuses on the inner demon within Karan Shergill, a highly irresponsible youth, as he is drawn towards the army, ultimately becoming a battlefield hero. It stands as a classic example of patriotism changing lives for the better.

Sardar Udham (2021)

Available On: Amazon Prime Video.

"Tell people I was a revolutionary." This line from Sardar Udham lingers, contributing to its high recall value. Starring Vicky Kaushal as the revolutionary Sardar Udham Singh, the film is an immaculate period drama that portrays a man who fought mostly in silence for his country. Shoojit Sircar's vision explores the patriotic and personal dimensions simultaneously.

Haqeeqat (1964)

Available On: YouTube.

Chetan Anand's Haqeeqat (1964) offers a pioneering perspective on war dramas. Set against the backdrop of the Sino-Indian War, this black-and-white film delves into the minds and hearts of soldiers, revealing stories deeper than the surface-level consolation they typically receive. It was ahead of its time, providing a nuanced portrayal of soldiers' experiences.

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (2020)

Available On: Netflix.

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl tells the story of a woman breaking barriers in a male-dominated field and making a significant decision for the country. The film's portrayal of patriotism is empowering, not just for women but for everyone seeking motivation. Pankaj Tripathi's role as a father adds a touching element to the narrative.

Raazi (2018)

Available On: Amazon Prime Video.

Raazi explores the dedication of a woman's life to her nation as she decides to marry across the border for an undercover operation. Based on Calling Sehmat, the film narrates the story of a relatively unknown freedom fighter, a mother living with the memories of an undercover operation, and the son she brings back with her. "Raazi" depicts patriotism without demonising the opposition, maintaining a balance even amid strong language exchanges. Vicky Kaushal's portrayal of Iqbal Syed stands out as one of the best-written army men.
