Arthur the King, directed by Simon Cellan Jones of The Family Plan fame, is a touching, multi-layered story that explores an adventure thriller on one level and a poignant dog drama on another, which are seamlessly interwoven throughout the film’s flow of events. The film is based on a true story and a non-fiction book by Mikael Lindnord titled Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home.
Arthur the King will be released in theatres in the United States on March 15, 2024. Since the film is being presented by Lionsgate, it is expected that the film will be available to stream on Lionsgate Play after its theatrical run. The screenplay, adapted by Michael Brandt, director of The Double (2011), uses a taut plot with a mix of emotional and adrenaline-spiking scenes, thereby maintaining a healthy balance.
Featuring the starry likes of Mark Wahlberg, Simu Liu, and Juliet Rylance Nathalie Emmanuel, Ali Suliman, Paul Guilfoyle, Ukai the dog and Bear Grylls as himself, Arthur the King packs a promising punch of entertainment and pathos. Wahlberg plays Michael, a pro adventure racer who is desperate to have one last chance to win the World Championship of Adventure Racing. The championship is ten days long and features a tough course of 435 miles.
However, his chance kind encounter and a selfless interaction involving a few meatballs with a quiet, friendly stray change his life forever. When the dog joins them in the middle of their adventure, three days and two hundred miles in, to prevent Michael’s team from walking off the cliff, he becomes a part of the team and gets christened Arthur the King. Now, with Arthur leading the way, finding off-the-grid trails and routes to their ending line, the conflicts begin.
Will Arthur be able to lead the team to victory before the others? And more importantly, will Arthur survive the ordeal, as he has already been sick during the race but has been sucking it up like a brave, good boy? As our hearts are already with Arthur, he better make it worthwhile for those of us visiting the theatre and watching the film on OTT for its soul-embracing, feel-good, yet thrilling premise.
