Are Premalu and Bramayugam Malayalam industry's Barbenheimer? Check what netizens have to say about Premayugam

While it is already a known fact that the Malayalam film industry generates quality content, the recent couple of weeks is a testament to the statement. With the romantic comedy film directed by Girish AD, Premalu, running in packed theatres, on the other hand is Mammootty's supernatural horror drama Bramayugam gaining positive reception.

On this note, netizens have begun to equate the releases of Premalu and Bramayugam to the Barbenheimer phenomena, and dubbed it as Premayugam. Barbenheimer is a cultural phenomenon and portmanteau of the film titles Barbie and Oppenheimer. Both the Hollywood films, despite having opposite subjects, released on the same day on July 21 last year.

Is Premayugam Malayalam’s Barbenheimer?

When Barbie and Oppenheimer released, social media had a field day with memes, merchandise and memorabilia for the contrasting films to release on the same day. While Barbie, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, is an absurdist comedy and inspired from Mattel’s iconic doll Barbie, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is a biopic of J Robert Oppenheimer, the scientific director of the Manhattan Project. The films releasing on the same day and winning big, prompted netizens to celebrate cinema more.

In line with this, fans of Malayalam cinema have been trending Premayugam, a portmanteau of Premalu and Bramayugam and celebrating both the films. Just like Barbie and Oppenheimer, Premalu and Bramayugam are also films that are opposite to each other. While the former is a colourful romantic comedy starring young actors Naslen and Mamitha Baiju, Bramayugam stars superstar Mammootty in a monochromatic supernatural horror drama . Netizens have been editing posters of both films, and celebrating the success of it.

About Premalu and Bramayugam

Premalu revolves around a shy and timid boy who meet Hyderabad-based IT specialist and falls in love. Does he overcome his uncertainties to approach her is the rest of the story. The film released on February 9 and earned positive reception. It also stars Shyam Mohan M, Meenakshi Raveendran, Akhila Bhargavan, Althaf Salim, Mathew Thomas, and Sangeet Pratap, among others.
