Bollywood is witnessing a tumultuous time of late, with most films failing to make a mark at the box office. Yash Raj Films too are bearing the brunt of the situation, with many of its recent productions such as Samrat Prithviraj, Jayeshbhai Jordaar, and Shamshera having unsuccessful box office runs. Anurag Kashyap had recently put the blame for YRF’s situation on chairman and managing director Aditya Chopra. Anupam Kher recently came out in support of the latter, slamming Anurag for his remarks.
In conversation with Sidharth Kannan, Kher said that he was very proud of Chopra, saying he considered Yash Chopra’s family as his own. The actor said that while building an empire like Yash Raj Films was not an easy task, it was easy for people to pass remarks. Kher said that he did not want to pass any judgement on what Kashyap said, but added “He is not the ultimate authority on human behaviour”.
During his conversation with Galatta Plus, Kashyap had said that YRF’s failure was due to Chopra’s decision making. “You have one person sitting in a cave, who doesn’t know the world outside, dictating how everybody should be making their films and telling them what to do”, Kashyap had said in reference to Chopra.
The director had gone on to say that Chopra should have tried to empower the people in his employ rather than try to control every single aspect of his production ventures. Talking about how Chopra didn’t ‘let his people be’, Kashyap had called it one of his biggest mistakes. Kashyap had further said that Chopra should hire good people and let them make the films.
Interestingly, Kher had earlier spoken of how many mainstream filmmakers do not cast him in their films these days, mentioning Chopra’s name as well. The veteran actor had said that while he felt bad about the situation, he did not blame any of them.
