After The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, which aired on Disney+Hotstar, came to its finale season, Marvel and especially Captain America fans got another surprise waiting by. The makers announced that Captain America has been renewed for its fourth instalment. That's right, Captain America 4 was announced right after The Falcon And The Winter Soldier came to an end.
It is now clear that Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) is the new Captain America after Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) passed on his legacy - the Captain America shield - to him. The scene, which was part of Avengers: Endgame, was also part of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier finale. In the episode, the Falcon (also the new Captain America) also sported a new look with an exclusively designed Wakandan flight suit.
Despite him being the lead role, Mackie did know about Captain America 4. He confirmed the same to EW in an interview. Recalling how he found out about Captain America 4, the actor said, “I literally found out yesterday in a grocery store. The checkout guy named Dwayne, a cool cat, he's like, ‘Yo, man. Is this real?!’ [Holds up a cellphone] I’m like, ‘I haven't heard anything.’ That's what I love about working for Marvel. They call you, they're like, ‘Come to L.A. We wanna tell you what's going on.’ So, I'm excited to see what happens, but I haven't heard anything."
Talking about his character in an interview with ScreenRant, Mackie joked, "What would be really bad is if the movie [Captain America 4] starts and I get blown out of the sky."
Reportedly, the cast for Captain America 4 hasn't been confirmed yet. Mackie is, however, expected to be a part of the film since he is ideally the new Captain America (unless Rogers is revived). Malcolm Spellman (co-writer of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) is co-writing the film with Disney+ series’ writer Dalan Musson.
It is still not clear whether the Russo brothers - Joe and Anthony Russo - would direct Captain America 4. The duo had worked on Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War previously.
