On September 20, the Delhi High Court upheld the rights to the Bollywood star Anil Kapoor's name, initials, picture, voice, and other personal characteristics. The case was heard by the Justice Prathiba M. Singh panel.
What does this mean?
This means that anyone who wants to use the actor's name, voice, or even screen identities like Mr. India, Lakhan, etc. must first obtain the actor's permission. Failing to do so may result in legal issues or other consequences.
Godaddy.com LLC, Dynadot LLC, and PDR Limited have also been ordered by the Delhi High Court to promptly block and suspend domains like Anilkapoor.com and others.
In addition, the court prohibited the use of GIFs with his image in them for monetary gain or other commercial objectives and the morphing of his image using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, all of which are likely to breach the veteran actor's rights.
The Bollywood actor had already petitioned the Delhi High Court to have his name, voice, signature, and image rights protected from infringement on social media and other platforms. As per the ANI report, he had previously filed a lawsuit in the Delhi High Court seeking a permanent injunction barring people in general from violating his personality rights by using his name, voice, signature, image, or any other characteristic that makes him uniquely identifiable for any monetary gain without his permission.
