In the Prime Video documentary Angry Young Men: The Salim-Javed Story, the creators and stars behind the Bollywood classic Sholay reflected on the making of the film and the challenges they faced. The documentary, which delves into the partnership of legendary writers Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, offers an in-depth look at how one of India’s most iconic films came to life.
The monumental scale of Sholay's production
Salim Khan, one half of the celebrated duo, shares how Ramesh Sippy, fresh off the success of Seeta Aur Geeta, was eager to take on an ambitious project. "Sippy Saab wanted to make a big film after the success of Seeta Aur Geeta. We narrated the story of Majboor to him, but he insisted he wanted to make a big film," Khan recalled.
This decision led to the creation of Sholay, a film that would go on to redefine Indian cinema.
Javed Akhtar emphasised the monumental scale of Sholay’s production. "Sholay’s location had turned into a township. A factory that made various gadgets was set up already. Say a scene was to be shot where Dharam ji is singing on a cycle; they would make the equipment so that it could move on one wheel. So, the scale of this picture was unprecedented," Akhtar explained, highlighting the meticulous effort put into every aspect of the film.
Sachin Pilgaonkar, who played Ahmed in the film, shared insight into the financial pressures that weighed heavily on director Sippy during the film's production. "Ramesh Ji, who was already nervous, got even more nervous. He started with a budget of Rs 1 crore, sanctioned by his father. By the time the film was completed, he had spent Rs 3 crore. Three times the budget," Pilgaonkar revealed, underscoring the risks taken to ensure the film’s success.
Initial criticism and team's response
Despite the hard work and dedication, Sholay initially faced harsh criticism from the trade papers, which left the team concerned. "We were worried that the trade papers were totally slashing the film," Sippy admitted, recalling the anxious moments before the film’s release.
Amitabh Bachchan, Ramesh Sippy, Salim Khan, and Javed Akhtar attended the emergency meeting in response to the negative feedback. Akhtar remembered the tense atmosphere and shared how the team remained confident despite the backlash. "We had an emergency meeting; Amitabh Bachchan was there. Ramesh Sippy, Salim Khan, and I were there. We told him not to worry. Let them say what they want to. This is going to be a super hit. It’s all nonsense," Akhtar said, standing by their belief in the film’s potential.

Bachchan also recounted a crucial moment when Sippy considered changing the film's ending due to the initial reactions. "Ramesh Ji said that we should think of changing the ending so that you don’t die, but you should live," he revealed. However, the team decided to stick with their original vision, a decision that proved pivotal.
After a slow start, Sholay would eventually go on to become one of the most celebrated films in Indian cinema. "After Monday, it became history. Didn’t it?" Bachchan remarked, encapsulating the journey of a film that would go on to achieve legendary status.
