Actors turning into directors is always an interesting phenomenon because it sparks curiosity about how those accustomed to being in front of the camera will fare behind it. Many actors worldwide have switched roles, with some excelling in their new positions. Angelina Jolie is one such actor who has tried her hand at directing multiple times. Although she doesn't receive much limelight for her directing work, she has given us notable films like In the Land of Blood and Honey, Unbroken, and First They Killed My Father. But what if we told you that rumours suggested she was also in contention to direct the on-screen adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey?
Yes, you read that right. Welcome to the world of cinema shocks. Fifty Shades of Grey, a film franchise born from E.L. James' books, starred Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson. The three films made under the trilogy have been very successful and have become a phenomenon. While the steamy drama on-screen attracted audiences to theatres, there was also an off-screen drama involving Angelina Jolie potentially directing the movies. Here's everything you need to know about this intriguing piece of cinematic history.
Back in the day, before Sam Taylor-Johnson was onboard and when the book was just about to be adapted into a feature film, rumours circulated that Angelina Jolie was in contention to direct Fifty Shades of Grey. However, nothing concrete came out of it. Sometime after the director buzz died down, new rumours suggested Jolie wanted to play the part that Dakota Johnson eventually took on.
Angelina Jolie addressed these rumours in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, where she was asked about being approached to direct Fifty Shades of Grey. “I think they’re just … it’s funny, I think with directing, you just think, ‘I’m better at telling some stories than others,’ but, um, who knows? I came very clear out of the gate: after Blood and Honey, if I ever directed again, it would have to be a certain kind of film,” Jolie said.
Jolie laughed off the rumours and expressed excitement about the film. “You know, I’m looking forward to seeing what Sam [Taylor-Johnson] does with Fifty Shades and she’s amazing.” Jolie was actually a fan of the novel. “It’s funny, I think with directing, you just think: I’m better at telling some stories than others, but, um, who knows?”
