Amol Palekar: With emergence of OTT platforms, wonderful female characters are scripted

Amol Palekar has made his OTT debut with ZEE5 original film 200 Halla Ho. The film features veteran actor-filmmaker Amol Palekar as one of the leading actors and marks his return to the screen after many years. The film is directed by Sarthak Dasgupta and has Amol playing the role of Arjun Dangle, a retired Dalit judge. Now, during a recent interaction, the veteran actor spoke about the OTT boom and its effects.

When asked if OTT has led to the end of the superstars' era, Amol told Indian Express that due to the OTT platforms, many new and brilliant actors are seen through various web content.

He also said, "It’s good that the monopoly of stars has diminished."

Palekar went on to reveal that no producer would have backed 200 Halla Ho had it been a theatrical release. He congratulated Zee for handling this hard-hitting subject.

While talking about the change in the portrayal of women in the movies, Amol went on to say that female-centric films were a rarity earlier but with the emergence of OTT platforms, wonderful female characters are scripted by the makers. He said that it's a commendable change."

The Paheli helmer added, "I, as a director, have always tried to project the inner strength of women."

Talking about 200 Halla Ho, the film also features Rinku Rajguru, Barun Sobti and Sahil Khattar in the lead roles. 

The film is about the story of women who are terrorised by a mobster who gang-raped, robbed, terrorised and murdered 300 families for 15 years. He then meets his nemesis in a young Dalit girl.

200 Halla Ho has dropped on ZEE5 on August 20 (Friday).
