Manjummel Boys has become the first Malayalam film in a long time to strike gold at the Tamil Nadu box office . One cannot overstate the role of the iconic song Kanmani Anbodu in endearing this film to cinema patrons in Tamil Nadu.
Kanmani Anbodu was originally composed by the music maestro Ilaiyaraaja for the 1991 movie Gunaa. Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan, who played the lead role in it, also sang the song, which became the timeless music for posterity.
Director Chidambaram S Poduval has effectively employed the song in Manjummel Boys, reinvigorating people's love for this classic tune. In light of the success of Manjummel Boys, a video has surfaced, providing insights into the creative ideas and thought process that went into making this iconic Kanmani Anbodu.
The video reveals Kamal giving creative prompts to help Ilaiyaraaja generate the simplest of tunes that are easily perceivable to a commoner. Kamal desired a song that not only enthralled listeners but was also elegant and simple enough for even a common man with no knowledge of music to decipher. "It should be the language of the person who can't read. Music should also be simple, without sophistication. It will begin as a dialogue, and we should not realize when it transforms into a song," Kamal explains to Ilaiyaraaja.
While it may seem like too much creative genius to process for a composer and deliver on the requirements, it was not a challenge for Ilaiyaraaja. "Come to the studio; we will finish the song," Ilaiyaraaja tells Kamal. The song they created that day continues to captivate millions of people to date.
Manjummel Boys tells the story of a group of friends who go on a holiday in Kodaikanal. However, their joyous trip takes a dramatic turn when one of their friends falls into a void in the Gunaa cave, which provides the backdrop for Kanmani Anbodu.
Inspired by real-life events, Manjummel Boys stars Soubin Shahir, Sreenath Bhasi, Balu Varghese, Ganapathi S. Poduval, and Lal Jr., among others.
