Whenever Imtiaz Ali presents the audience with a film, they dissect it to a point where even the filmmaker is surprised by the depth of his fans' analysis. After what felt like a detour with Love Aaj Kal (2020), the filmmaker bounced back with two web shows during the lockdown (She Season 2 and Dr. Arora). But the void that the fans were feeling, as far as his feature films were concerned, was evident. So it came as a relief when he announced his return to feature films with Amar Singh Chamkila. The filmmaker then shared the first look teaser of the film a year ago, leaving us all intrigued and curious to know what this new era of his filmmaking has in store. The fact that he has brought back his A-team with AR Rahman, Irshad Kamil, and even Mohit Chauhan made us all impatient.
The filmmaker chose today to share the first trailer for Amar Singh Chamkila as the movie inches closer to its release date. The trailer has turned out to be one of the best cinematic treats in recent times. Amar Singh Chamkila tells the story of the celebrated Punjabi musician who was called the Elvis of Punjab. The movie depicts his coming of age, rise to stardom, struggle to stay there, and the cost of having a voice, as hinted at in the trailer.
Now, as fans begin their game of dissection, let’s take a look at five highlights from the trailer of Amar Singh Chamkila that stand out and have us excited for what is to come on April 12, when the movie releases on Netflix.
Diljit Dosanjh, the man of the hour, is back on screen after many singles, and it feels like he has given Chamkila his all. The performance feels career-defining, and the way the actor has approached the character is so interesting. As said by Imtiaz Ali at the trailer launch event, he is nowhere Diljit but only Chamkila, and you can see him in character throughout.
Considering the movie is directed by Imtiaz Ali, we already expected poetry in words and visuals. But even then, the almost 3-minute-long trailer has some powerful dialogues. The one where Diljit looks at men with guns and says, "Yeh banduk wale hai, Inka kaam hai goli chalana...," lands extremely well. Even the song Ishq Mitaye, which was released close to a month ago, had some very interesting dialogues. It also features Kumud Mishra, who had one of the best lines of the film thus far.
This film marks the reunion of the cult trio Imtiaz Ali, AR Rahman, and Irshad Kamil after close to a decade. The last time they collaborated was for Tamasha (2015). The music album is one of the most anticipated ones of the year. The first two songs have been winners, and we are already excited for the rest. The songs performed today at the trailer launch event also had a track by Kailash Kher with Rahman on the mic too, which leaves us even more excited. Add to it that Alka Yagnik joins them too.
This is the Imtiaz Ali we have never seen before. Yes, there are elements that feel homely because we have loved and obsessed with his past work, but the rest is the filmmaker experimenting with something new. Like Anurag Kashyap recently said in his stories, this is the Imtiaz Ali we have never seen before, and now we can understand why he must have said that.
The only thing that intrigues and confuses is the lack of dialogue on Parineeti Chopra’s part. She has no dialogues in the trailer, and that raises a lot of questions. The actor plays Amarjot Kaur, who was Chamkila’s co-performer and wife. The actor, as per reports, has songs sung by her in the movie, so this could also be a move to keep her as the surprise element of the film.
Amar Singh Chamkila is set to hit Netflix on April 12, 2024. The movie will be a direct-to-digital release. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
