Gearing up to watch the much-awaited sequel to Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan in theatres tomorrow? Here's a quick recap of what happened in the first instalment of the film.

Comet appears in the sky demanding the sacrifice of royal blood
As the reigning king Sundara Chola's (Prakash Raj) health deteriorates, people of the kingdom predict that he would pass away, leaving the throne to the valiant Crown Prince Aditha Karikalan (Vikram). However, the people want the younger prince Arunmozhi Varman (Jayam Ravi) to be their king as Karikalan is hot-headed. Arunmozhi Varman is known for his kindness and is a brave warrior who is fighting in Ilangai (Sri Lanka). He has high regards for his elder sister Kundavai (Trisha), whose wish is that Arunmozhi ascend the Chola throne.

Karikalan sends a crucial message through Vanthiyathevan
Aditha Karikalan sends his trusted aide and commander V allavarayan Vanthiyathevan (Karthi) to Kadambur when he receives news that something fishy is brewing in the Kadambur palace among the Chola allies. He asks him to inform the same to his sister Kundavai in Pazhaiyar and father Sundara Chola in Thanjavur. Vanthiyathen enters the Kadambur Palace and learns about the plan

The ruse of Pazhuvettaraiayer brothers
The Pazhuvettaraiyar brother duo (Sarathkumar and Parthiban), scheme a plan to pitch Madhurantakan as the next king as they believe that he is the rightful heir to the throne. Madhurantakan was very young when his father, the then king Gandaraditya Chola, passed away in a war. Hence, the throne went to his uncle Arinjaya Cholan and later to Madhurantakan's cousin Sundara Cholan. A Shiva devotee until then, Madhurantakan agrees to the plan.

Nandini eyes the Chola throne
Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar's wife, Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), wants to avenge the death of the Pandiya King Veerapandiyan, who was killed by Aditha Karikalan. She plots the downfall of the Cholas along with the help of Manthiravathi Ravidasan (Kishore), Soman Sambavan (Riyaz Khan) and the others from the Pandiya kingdom. She also can't see Kundavai eye to eye and the ladies ultimately have a face-off when Kundavai arrives at the Tanjavur palace.

Arunmozhi Varman's tryst in Ilangai
Arunmozhi Varman is in Ilangai wag ing war against King Magindan. After he emerges victorious in the war, the Buddhist monks there ask him to be the king of Ilangai, which he refuses. He later faces many attacks, courtesy the Pandiyas but is saved due to Vanthiyathevan and Oomai Rani. Meanwhile, boatwoman Poonguzhali has a special place in her heart for the brave prince. As Vanthiyathevan and Arunmozhi Varman return to the Chola kingdom after they get an order from Sundara Cholan, they get stuck in a storm in the middle of the sea.
