Ali Fazal, who is slowly and steadily expanding his Hollywood filmography, has joined the cast of Gerard Butler-led action-thriller Kandahar.
Ric Roman Waugh, known for directing films like Angel Has Fallen, Felon, and Greenland, is at the helm.
"I always look forward to new and exciting ventures. We are all set to begin production soon," said Fazal in a statement, according to PTI.
Besides Fazal, another face added to the cast is Legion star Navid Negahban.
Butler will be seen as Tom Harris, "an undercover CIA operative, stuck deep in hostile territory in Afghanistan. He must fight his way out, alongside his Afghan translator, to an extraction point in Kandahar, all whilst avoiding the elite special forces tasked with hunting them down," states Deadline.
This project will reunite Butler with Waugh once again after Greenland. It is also the first big-budget American film to begin filming in Saudi Arabia's AlUla region, which has the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hegra. Kandahar will also be shot in Jeddah, and with the support of the Saudi Film Commission, it will employ a local crew for the same.
Thunder Road Films (John Wick and Sicario), G-BASE and Capstone Group are the producers.
Fazal has been a part of the Amazon Prime series Mirzapur and was also seen in Victoria and Abdul with Judie Dench. His upcoming projects include the Kenneth Branagh directorial Death on the Nile and an untitled Arati Kadav film.
