Director-actor Khalid Rahman, better known for films like Anuraga Karikkin Vellam, Love and Thallumaala, released the sports comedy Alappuzha Gymkhana as one of three Vishu presentations from Malayalam cinema. The film, featuring an ensemble cast, including Premalu fame Nas len K Gafoor, Lukman Avaran, Ganapathi, Sandeep Ravi, Anagha Maya Ravi, among many others, has emerged the Vishu box office winner, beating Mammootty’s Bazooka and Basil Joseph’s Maranamass.

Released in theatres on April 10, Alappuzha Gymkhana, which follows a bunch of youngsters hoping to get into college with sports quota grace marks, is reported to have made a little over Rs 15 crore so far. Rs 1.5 crore of this has come from Karnataka, where the film has been drawing phenomenal footfalls and has been registering increase in shows, especially in the Bengaluru region.

According to industry trackers, the rest of India collections of Alappuzha Gymkhana is just under Rs 3 crore (Rs 2.82 cr), more than half of which has come from Karnataka. The film had its best day so far on Day 3 (Saturday), when it made Rs 51 lakh, with the Sunday collection a close second at Rs 47 lakh. The film holds the second highest show count in the Bengaluru region, behind Ajith’s Good Bad Ugly, which is, of course, miles ahead.

Written by Khalid Rahman and Sreeni Saseendran, Alappuzha Gymkhana has Naslen as a boxer, a role that had the young actor sport a more muscular frame. The film opened to largely positive reviews and was one of only 4 films showing an uptick in show count in Bengaluru, the others being Good Bad Ugly, Jaat and the Kannada film Vaamana. The film’s Rs 25 lakh gross at the Karnataka Box office on Day 1 is said to be with the best overall occupancy among all the films that released on April 10. It also became the second best opener among Malayalam films behind Bazooka, which it has overtaken comfortably.
