Akshaya Tritiya 2023: It is a very happy day in the entire Puri household, says Vardhan Puri

Hello Vardhan Puri! To beguin with, please tell us as to what does ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ mean to you?
‘Akshaya Tritiya’ is a very happy day in the entire Puri household. It’s basically a day to mark the importance of success and prosperity in our lives.

Since when did you start celebrating the festival of Akshaya Tritiya?
I have great memories of celebrating the festival ever since I was a little boy.

How are you planning to celebrate ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ this year?
The idea is to have a little puja at home and go to a jewelry shop and buy gold, and then have a nice dinner with family and wind up slightly late after a music session.

Of all these years of celebrating ‘Akshaya Tritiya’, which year has been the most memorable for you and why?
‘Akshaya Tritiya’ is very special each year, and extremely memorable. I don’t think I can choose one year over the others. But... because I am an optimist, I would like to say that this year will be the best!

Do you think that, over the years, the spirit and concept of ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ has changed?
I do not think that it has changed in my life. In fact, my faith in this beautiful festival and this auspicious day has just been getting stronger. I feel like it is gaining more and more relevance and importance in my heart and mind, as the years have progressed.

The general concept/ tradition of ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ states that you need to buy gold on that day, as it’s considered extremely auspicious. Do you buy gold in big quantities or just for namesake as in, to participate in the traditional custom?
Yes, we do buy a considerable amount of gold every year on ‘Akshaya Tritiya’. It’s something which is tradition based and it’s a practice that we have been following for many years, probably since five generations now.

Are you well versed with the traditional mantra during ‘Akshaya Tritiya’? Will you be doing the pooja yourself for ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ or are you planning to hire a pandit ji to do the same?
I am not well versed with the traditional mantra during ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ but yes we do have a puja at home and we have our family panditji who comes home and helps us with the puja.

What’s going to be your dress code on the day of ‘Akshaya Tritiya’? What will you wear?
My dress code on this day is usually Indian wear. Last year, I wore white and this time I’m planning to wear something more exciting and glamorous… maybe a maroon and gold kurta! I dress according to my mood.

And towards evening, will you slip into partywear or is it going to be the traditional attire for you the whole day?
I will slip into party wear towards the evening in the presence of family and friends as we will dance, sing and have a great time together.

The occasion of ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ is always synonymous with gold. Can you name the three people in your life whom you consider ‘GOLD’?
I can’t name three people because there are too many people who are ‘GOLD’ for me. But I would like to say that my niece Devika is 24 carat PURE GOLD in my life and this time I am going to celebrate with her and have the greatest day possible.

‘Akshaya Tritiya’ almost coincides with the auspicious festival of Eid. What are your plans for your tummy? Are you going to have your tummy have its way through ‘Akshaya Tritiya’s sweets as well as Eid’s Sheer kurma and other delicacies? Or are you planning to eat everything in moderation as looking good and looking fit is the call of your profession?
Yes, this time... ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ does coincide with Eid this time and I plan to have the yummy sweets that are offered on both the festive occasions. I’m going to have my fair share of mithai at my home and follow that with sheer korma to celebrate Eid at my Muslim friends’ houses.

On a professional front, tell us as to what is keeping you busy these days?
I have been mostly busy with the shoot of my upcoming political thriller. It’s a film which needs heavy preparation. I am having the time of my life shooting for it. It’s extremely challenging and the hours are crazy since we are shooting at night. Once it comes out, it’s all going to be worth it.
