Umesh Shukla's 2012 film OMG - Oh My God! sprung a pleasant surprise on everyone when it emerged as a major commercial success after having received equally encouraging reviews from critics. The film, starring Paresh Rawal, Akshay Kumar and others, would then warrant multiple remakes across different languages including one in Telugu, which starred Venkatesh, Shriya Saran and Pawan Kalyan in lead roles.
Titled Gopala Gopala, the Telugu remake was helmed by Kishore Kumar Pardasani and that film, too, lived up to the hype and went on to become a bona fide box-office hit. OMG was also remade in Kannada as Mukunda Murari with Upendra and Sudeep playing the main roles in the film.
Of course, OMG's spiritual sequel, as it were, OMG 2 was released earlier this year with Akshay Kumar returning to play a key role for the second time and Pankaj Tripathi & Yami Gautam replacing the previous principal cast. Alongside, Amit Rai would replace Umesh Shukla as the director and the film, too, came as a major departure in terms of subject matter as it bravely dealt with the highly tabooed and sensitive topic of sex education among students in India. Despite the stark shift, OMG 2 ended up as a big hit with over Rs. 220 crores to its name.
Now, quite interestingly, we hear that there's a Telugu remake of the same film on the cards and that multiple producers in Telugu cinema are eyeing the rights for this. In the past, one has seen several successful films from other regions finding the remake space in Telugu and with a hit film like OMG 2 now apparently up for grabs, one finds it completely rational as part of filmmakers to wish to retell the story in a slightly different manner. The OMG 2 remake, though, is evidently still at its nascent stage but the latest reports do suggest that something's brewing behind the scenes and that it's only a matter of time before we hear more. And who knows, we could have Powerstar Pawan Kalyan returning to play the all-important role.
In the recent past, Pawan Kalyan himself has been part of multiple major remakes such as Teen Maar (remake of Love Aaj Kal), Gabbar Singh (Dabangg), Vakeel Saab (Pink) and Bheemla Nayak (Ayyappanum Koshiyum).
