Fans of Ajith Kumar were in for a treat recently when the makers of the Tamil film Vidaamuyarchi released the teaser as a surprise update last week. The team also announced that the film will be released on Pongal 2025 in January. However, it looks like the makers have landed in a soup after the film has been called the alleged remake of the Hollywood thriller Breakdown, with the production house of the original film suing Vidaamuyarchi makers on the grounds of copyright violation.
Vidaamuyarchi’s teaser was released recently on social media by the makers. Starring Ajith Kumar, Trisha, Arjun, and others, the teaser heavily resembles the 1997 Hollywood action thriller film Breakdown starring actors Kurt Russell, JT Walsh, and Kathleen Quinlan. The film revolves around a couple who are on a road trip when their car breaks down. However, after the wife disappears in the arid landscape they are in, it is up to the husband to solve the mystery of her abduction.
From looking at the visuals of the Vidaamuyarchi teaser, it looks like the Ajith Kumar-starrer is a remake of the 1997 film, as we see the visuals of the desert with Ajith Kumar frantically searching for his wife. Now, it looks like the production houses of Breakdown have sent a legal notice to Vidaamuyarchi producers Lyca Productions, for a compensation of $15 million on the grounds of copyright violation. Paramount Pictures distributed Breakdown, with Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis backing the film.
While it is still unclear how the makers of Vidaamuyarchi will tackle the copyright violation, the Magizh Thirumeni directorial has announced a release in January 2025 for Pongal. It is to be noted that another Ajith Kumar film, Good Bad Ugly, has also been scheduled to release during the same time frame. This could only mean that one of the films has to back out. Only time can tell which of the producers will let go of the January release.
Good Bad Ugly is helmed by Adhik Ravichandran and produced by Mythri Movie Makers. Arjun Das, Prasanna, and others are part of the film.
