Earlier today, Varun Dhawan posted on his Instagram that he was going to announce a new update on his upcoming film, tentatively titled VD18. The film, which is reportedly the Hindi remake of Atlee's 2016 Tamil blockbuster Theri, starring Vijay and Samantha, is set for its big-screen release later this year.

Before the update announcement on Sunday, here's all you need to know about the reported cop drama. It marks Varun's first outing as a police officer and teams him up with Keerthy Suresh as the female lead, who is making her Bollywood debut.

Details below...

What's VD18 about?

If the film is a remake of Theri, then it's about an undercover cop who changes identities and relocates to a peaceful area. When he was younger, he had to change his identity to save his family from harm. A teacher who was secretly crushing on him had seen him and wanted to know his real name when that happened. As a result of seeing the horrific deaths of his mother and wife, he goes on a hunt. After relentlessly pulling him in by kidnapping his daughter, his adversaries were determined not to let him go lightly, even though he had no intention of pursuing retribution. By rescuing his daughter, he reveals his true character.

The team behind VD18

Kalees, who has assisted Atlee as a director, is all set to make his directorial debut with the film. Moreover, the Jawan helmer is producing the film alongside Murad Khetani.

Music composer Thaman's full-fledged Bollywood debut

Thaman will make his solo composing debut in Bollywood with this dramatic action movie, which stars Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, and Wamiqa Gabbi. His previous work with Rohit Shetty was a unique two-song affair. The composer of Ala Vaikunthapurramaloo has composed the title track of 2017's Golmaal Again and the theme song of 2018's Simmba. Nevertheless, he has largely avoided appearing in Hindi films other than that one. According to reports, VD18 is giving it his all to make the film stand out on the album, marking the official beginning of his Bollywood career. We don't yet know much about the album, but rumour has it that it has four or five tracks. Thaman composed the film's background score as well.

VD18 release date

After more than a year of waiting, Varun Dhawan is set to have a big-screen release. The film will hit theatres on May 31, 2024.
