Agent on OTT: Finally! Akhil Akkineni-Mammootty starrer gets a release date on SonyLIV

Agent, starring Akhil Akkineni and Mammootty, faced unexpected hurdles in its digital premiere . Due to contractual issues between the film's producers and their streaming partner, the release was delayed. However, we can now confirm that the espionage thriller will now be available for streaming on SonlyLIV starting June 23.

Agent was seen as a potential breakthrough for Akhil Akkineni, aiming to establish him as a prominent action hero in the industry. Akhil dedicated himself to the role, going the extra mile to build muscles and sculpt his physique to portray a daring spy. Unfortunately, the movie faced numerous challenges and failed to meet expectations at the box office, resulting in major disappointment.

Written and directed by Surender Reddy, the production of Agent also encountered delays due to various factors. Following the film's underwhelming performance, producer Anil Sunkara took full responsibility and publicly acknowledged the mistakes made during its production. 

Sunkara acknowledged overspending and the lack of a solid script as key errors. "We have to take the entire blame for #Agent. Though we know it's an uphill task, we thought of conquering but failed to do so as we did a blunder starting the project without a bound script & innumerable issues including Covid followed," as mentioned in a tweet.

Sunkara further extended his apologies to those who had high hopes for the film and assured them that he would learn from this costly mistake, vowing not to repeat it in future projects.

Interestingly, the negative reception and unfavourable word-of-mouth for Agent inadvertently boosted the box office performance of Virupaksha, a horror thriller directed by debutant Karthik Varma Dandu and written by Sukumar of Pushpa: The Rise fame.

Agent delves into the story of a ruthless top spy, portrayed by Mammootty, who recruits and mentors a new spy to confront the threats posed by a former spy turned rogue. It also stars Dino Morea as the main antagonist.
