Controversy around the Film

The movie was released theatrically on May 5 – and clashed with the film, The Kerala Story, at the box office. Both the movies witnessed contrasting box office fates. While The Kerala Story ended up minting over Rs 100 crores at the box office, Afwaah struggled to breathe at the theatres.

Surprisingly, both the films were rated almost equally by almost all the prominent news portals. On May 10, five days after both the films hit the theatres, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap came out against the move to banning the former, writing that one can disagree with a film, find it a “propaganda”, but halting its screening is wrong. Instead, he asked people to watch Afwaah and make their voice “stronger”.

Box Office Collection

As per a report published in The Film Companion, Afwaah earned merely Rs 95 lakh over its first three days of theatrical release. Later, it struggled to exist at the theatres.
