After UFO reduces the digital projection charge, SVF launches a new VPF model – here is what it means

Last week, after a long battle with the Eastern India Motion Pictures Association (EIMPA), the digital cinema company UFO reduced the digital projection charge of Bengali films by almost one-third. The producers and directors from the Bengali entertainment industry welcomed the decision. A few producers, including Rana Sarkar, pleaded with the QUBE officials to make similar efforts.

Now, SVF has announced the launch of the Per Show VPF (Virtual Print Fee) model for Bengali movies in Non-DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) properties. This initiative, developed in collaboration with UFO, marks a step towards revitalising the Bengali film industry by making movie distribution more affordable and accessible for exhibitors, producers, and distributors.

The new model is designed with a focus on affordability and accessibility. By significantly reducing the costs associated with digital prints, this model will facilitate the release of more movies, allowing producers to expand their reach substantially. Exhibitors will benefit from lower costs, enabling them to showcase a broader range of films. Producers will find it more economical to release their movies on a larger scale, ensuring they reach a wider audience. Distributors will enjoy more affordable options and flexibility, allowing for a diverse array of movies to be shown.

“The introduction of this new Per Show VPF model is a commitment to the Bengali film industry,” said Rahul Mohta, President – Digital Cinema, SVF. “We believe this initiative will help in overcoming the financial barriers that have traditionally hindered the growth of our cinema. By making movie distribution more cost-effective, we aim to support the industry in reaching new heights,” he added. 

According to a press release issued by SVF, The announcement was due on June 18, 2024. “The announcement was delayed due to an unfortunate fire incident at Acropolis Mall, where the SVF office is located. Despite this setback, the model is now live and ready to benefit the entire film industry,” the press release read.
