Director Karan Malhotra is awaiting the release of Shamshera starring Ranbir Kapoor in the lead, which is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. The director of the period action drama has now opened up about one of his most ambitious projects that did not find a footing, a film based on Amish Tripathi’s Immortals of Meluha.

Talking to ETimes, Karan said, “I still wish to make a film on The Immortals Of Meluha. But I don’t know who has the rights to the book right now. I don’t know what the future has in store, but right now, all my energies are with Shamshera. I hope it shines the way we want it to.''

There were plenty of reports in the past that stated that a movie adaptation of the popular book series would be made by Karan Johar, with actors such as Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Salman Khan all linked to it. But the reports eventually died out with a project not coming to fruition.

Earlier this April, it was announced that Shekhar Kapur and The Family Man 2 director Suparn Varma would helm a series based on the book series. The show is backed by International Art Machine, who are looking to make their way into India with other projects as well.

Karan Malhotra’s Shamshera, which is set in the late 1800’s, is a story about a dacoit who has to step up for the liberation of his people against the oppression of British rule. The movie, which features Ranbir in a dual role, also stars Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor. Shamshera is set to hit theatres on July 22.
