There is no way you haven’t heard about Netflix’s latest offering, Adolescence, which has taken the world of streaming by storm. Even if you haven’t watched the show yet, chances are you’ve at least heard about it. Starring debutant Owen Cooper in the lead, the series follows a teenage boy accused of killing his classmate and the intense investigation that ensues. With Brad Pitt serving as one of its executive producers, Adolescence raked in 24.3 million views within just four days and an impressive 66.3 million after two weeks—setting a new Netflix record for a limited series. However, fans are now wondering whether a second season is on the horizon, especially since the show concludes with an ending that isn’t exactly open-ended. Now, creators Stephen Graham and Hannah Walters have addressed the possibility of Adolescence Season 2.
Adolescence is co-created and written by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne (The Swimmers, Joy), with direction by Philip Barantini, who previously employed a similar continuous one-shot style in the 2021 BAFTA- and BIFA-nominated film Boiling Point. Graham also starred in Boiling Point. Now, he has shed some light on whether a second season could be in the works, while Hannah Walters has explained why a prequel or sequel to the first season isn’t likely.
Speaking to Variety about the possibility of Adolescence Season 2, Graham teased, “Possibly. Let’s see how the figures are. But yeah, there’s the possibility of developing another story.” Adding to this, Walters expressed her enthusiasm for working with Netflix again but acknowledged that following up on something so well-received is a difficult task.
A prequel to Adolescence? That’s certainly not going to happen,” Walters stated when asked about the chances of exploring the story’s past. “But there’s so much mileage in the one-shot technique and in diving deeper into human nature with another storyline. Everything’s looking good … everyone’s happy, shall we say?”
The official Netflix synopsis for Adolescence reads: "Streaming now, Adolescence is a four-part limited series starring Stephen Graham (Boiling Point, Bodies), with each episode filmed in one unflinching and continuous shot. The gripping story unfolds in real time as the main characters—from the central family to the detectives investigating the crime—search for answers in the wake of a shocking tragedy. Who is actually responsible? Why did it happen? Could it have been prevented?”
