Adipurush, one of the most expensive mythological films in India, unceremoniously made its debut on the streaming platforms on Friday. Starring Telugu superstar Prabhas in the lead, Adipurush was marred by numerous controversies from the very beginning.
Adipurush suffered its first major setback following the release of its teaser at a grand event in Uttar Pradesh. Fans and the audience were shocked when they realised that Adipurush was a mix of live-action and animation, and the tacky visual effects added to their shock. The backlash was instant and massive. The teaser garnered extremely negative reactions from across the country. The outrage was unprecedented.

Director | Om Raut |
OTT release date | August 11 |

Director-producer Om Raut was under a lot of fire and he was forced to postpone the release of Adipurush for about six months. The filmmakers went back to the editing room and started reworking the movie's VFX, which is said to have cost a fortune for the filmmakers. After a few months, the filmmakers released another trailer. But, this time, the promo video had more CGI shots to make it look more dynamic. The movie's colour palette had also been changed significantly, with the filmmakers opting for muted colours instead of bright ones.
Compared to the teaser, the trailer seemed to show a little more promise. However, many wondered whether cosmetic changes can fix the movie's narrat ive and other underlying problems. The trailer gave the film a second chance. The producers and star cast promoted it with a lot of zeal, promising the audiences that Adipurush must be seen on the big screen to fully understand the director's vision and efforts.
Adipurush opened in cinemas on June 16 to packed houses across the world, thanks to Prabhas' stardom. And the filmmakers were not ready for what happened next. It seemed almost everyone who saw the movie was offended by it for some reason or the other, sparking a nationwide outrage. The movie's dialogue writer Manoj Muntashir faced a lot of flak for writing dialogues that were deemed unworthy to be in a movie based on India's beloved epic.
Adipurush was promoted as a cinematic adaptation of the Indian epic Ramayana. And in light of the extreme backlash, the filmmakers later claimed that it was just inspired by Ramayana and was not an actual adaptation.
Adipurush ended its box office run on a disastrous note. And the movie's theatrical reception explains why the filmmakers didn't want to make a lot of fuss about its digital premiere.
Besides Prabhas, Adipurush also stars Saif Ali Khan, Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh, and Devdutta Nage.
The South Indian language versions of Adipurush are available on Amazon Prime Video, while the Hindi version is streaming on Netflix.
