The conversation around the streaming world taking over the big screen has been ongoing for a long time now, with many artists weighing in. While some agree with it, others feel the magic of theaters isn’t going anywhere. However, there’s also the constraint of a limited theatrical run before a movie hits streaming, leading to discussions about the windows between the two.

Now, there is one superstar who wants to bring a revolution of sorts by making his films, and eventually, all others, stay in theaters for a longer period before they are made available to streaming platforms. Aamir Khan has reportedly taken steps to ensure films remain in theaters for an extended time and not succumb to the demands of streaming platforms by selling the rights in advance.

Aamir Khan Chalks New Plan

For the unversed, according to reports, Aamir Khan is in discussions to avoid selling the streaming rights of his films to platforms in advance before the film's release. The idea is to revive the social comedy genre by keeping it exclusive to the big screen for at least 12 weeks before it becomes available on streaming platforms. Currently, most contracts require a 90-day window between a film’s theatrical release and its debut on OTT. Read on to know everything you should about the same.

According to Pinkvilla, a source close to the development said, “Aamir doesn’t want to pre-sell the digital rights of his films. His vision is to revive the social comedy genre by keeping it exclusive for the big screen for at least 12 weeks. He will sell the digital rights only after the film’s release in cinemas. While the digital medium is keeping the box-office clause in the contract, Aamir is willing to sell and value his film based on the audience reception to the content during its theatrical release.”

The report adds that many view Aamir Khan's idea as a potential game-changer because it puts more authority back into the hands of content creators. “With no logos of digital players on posters and trailers, Aamir aims to keep his communication clear: experience his content only on the big screen. His idea is to return to the good old days when viewers had no idea about the satellite premieres.”

The move is being called a gutsy step towards a change that could benefit filmmakers. Meanwhile, Aamir will next be seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, a film starring Genelia D'Souza, set to release on December 20, 2024, as of now. There is no clarity on whether the new idea will be implemented for this film or not. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
