Aamir Khan surprised not just everyone but even himself when he ended up playing an 18-year-old student in Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots. The actor almost refused the movie, much like Bhagat Singh. He ended up doing the film which became iconic and there was a reason for it.

Refused to play Bhagat Singh because…

Aamir refused to play Bhagat Singh because he is a real historical character who plays a very important part in people’s lives. He called the freedom fighter ‘unique and rare,’ while talking about everything Bhagat Singh achieved by his early 20s. Aamir said that many cannot even imagine the kind of courage Bhagat Singh had, and how he was fearless. He recalled how the freedom fighter who has just started getting stubble, makes prominent statements. Imagining himself as a man about to touch 40, in the scenario, Aamir said that the role would not suit him. Thus, he ended up rejecting the role. Rajkumar Santoshi ended up casting Ajay Devgn for the role, but Aamir recalls telling him that he should cast a 20-30 year-old to play the icon on the big screen.

Almost refused 3 Idiots too, here’s why he took it up

Coming to 3 Idiots, Aamir said that he almost rejected the movie. He still believed that being a 44-year-old taking up the role of an 18-year-old would be giving trolls an open invitation. The actor just didn’t see him going to college carrying a bag full of books. Aamir told Rajkumar Hirani to cast younger actors but the filmmaker wanted Aamir in the role. The actor loved watching Munna Bhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munna Bhai, featuring Sanjay Dutt and was a huge fan of the director. Not able to see him in the role, Aamir still went ahead because Rajkumar reminded him that he has worked in movies like Taare Zameen Par and Lagaan which did not click with the audiences when the first promos were out. The actor recalled his own dialogue, “Kaamyaabi ke peeche mat daudon, aap qaabil bano,” and then believed that he shouldn’t chase whether the film will be successful or not. “I really want you,” Rajkumar told Aamir and the actor felt some connection that even though he doesn’t leave anything at other’s expense, Aamir blindfolded his beliefs and surrendered to Rajkumar Hirani’s vision.

AR Murugadoss was Aamir Khan’s reference for 3 Idiots

Aamir could not feel 18, because he wasn’t of the age but he took references from AR Murugadoss, who had helmed Ghajini. The actor loves how the director has no filter and would express openly if he does or doesn’t like an idea. Aamir remembers the dialogue between him and Boman Irani, where the actor says that they’re first in suicides. The actor kept no filter in the scene but expressed by showing his tongue after saying the very dialogue. The other reference was Mansoor Khan’s son Pablo, who keeps moving all the time.
