The Kannada film Aachar & Co is the latest venture from PRK Productions, one that was approved by the late Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar based on a 6-minute showreel that its director and leading lady, Sindhu Sreenivasa Murthy had shown him when she was working on another of his productions, French Biriyani. The film is based on a script that Sindhu co-wrote with standup comedian Kanan Gill some time ago.
Following the film’s trailer launch on July 13, Kanan took to Instagram to share his thoughts about it. “A few years ago @sindhusmurthy and I wrote a movie, and it’s finally releasing! Sindhu is a superstar who acted in and directed the movie and is currently flying through the air, looking for crime to fight. The movie is in Kannada —I wrote it in English, because my Kannada is far below screenplay level. It’s a story set in Bangalore in the 60s, I wasn’t alive in the 60s but it’s a safe bet that the world wasn’t backlit with apocalypse as much as it is now —yet in serenity too there were challenges and among the challenges, new and exciting sources for joy. The movie is about love and family, and it is not about meteors. Aachar & Co releases in theatres July 28!”
The film revolves around the typical orthodox family of Madhusudhan Aachar (Ashok) and Savitri (Sudha Belawadi) in a Jayanagar household of the 60s, and their 10 children. “The story is set in the 60s, because it was a decade of important changes, like industrialisation and nationalisation of banks, but, most importantly, gender roles also began changing. Aachar & Co looks at how these 10 children of the Aachar household grow up amid these changing dynamics,” Sindhu said during the film’s trailer launch.
